Doula

"Birth is not only about making babies. Birth is about making mothers - strong, competent, capable mothers who trust themselves and know their inner strength" - Barbara Katz Rothman

Birth Doula

As your doula I am entirely dedicated to you, throughout pregnancy, birth and in the postpartum period. I offer a free consultation meeting, and once booked will meet with you a further two times for approximately an hour each time. I am available on phone, text and email from time of booking and will aim to get back to you as soon as possible. At 38 weeks I will go on call, and will stay on call 24/7 until the baby is born, which typically happens by 42 weeks. From when labour begins I can be with you and will offer you continuous support throughout*. After your baby is born I will stay with you until baby has fed and you are happy for me to go. I will then meet with you once or twice postnatally.

I am a Doula UK recognised birth Doula and trained with Nurturing Birth in 2014. Prior to my training, throughout, and for a period after, I also worked as a Maternity Support Worker at The Royal Surrey County Hospital. To read more about why I became a doula please read here.

In addition to the experience I bring from being a mother of four, I have supported; home birth, hospital birth, planned and emergency caesarean sections, baby loss, twin births, mothers with mental health issues and other medical issues. Every birth brings new experience and with it personal growth and knowledge. To complement my on the job learning I also do regular CPD (Continued Professional Development) in both medical and holistic fields. My primary focus however is to provide emotional and physical support to the mother. Support can take many forms and the support I offer includes;

ANTENATAL; birth preparations, discussing birth options and making a birth plan, counselling, signposting.

BIRTH; relaxation techniques, movement and positioning, reassuring presence, massage and counter pressure, support to birth partners including encouragement in how they can participate if desired, advocacy and protecting the birth space.

POSTNATAL; debriefing the birth, signposting, breastfeeding support, recovery.

Having a doula can quite literally transform your birth experience; reduction in the need for pain relief, reduction of instrumental assistance, reduction of caesarean birth, shorter labour, better outcomes for breastfeeding and lower incidence of postnatal depression. You can read more about it here.

I work without judgement, respecting and supporting birth in absolutely all it's forms. From planned sections to freebirth, I am there to support YOU, and YOUR choices.

Postnatal

Becoming a new mother, or a mother again, is a wonderful life changing event. Where there is change there is the need for adjustment, and sometimes a little support is needed. I work postnatally with families anytime from right after birth to months later. The length of time I work with your family would depend on the hours desired and my availability. The support I offer includes; counselling, emotional support, confidence building, practical help with the baby and/or other children, basic household chores, other practical help with the family.

Whether it is physical and/or emotional help you need having me as your postnatal doula can help make the transition through the fourth trimester and beyond an easier and more enjoyable journey.

*Support is continuous, and that is one of the key and most significant elements of having a doula. Sometimes birth can be a gentle and slow process, it can go on for a substantial length of time. With careful assessment it may be necessary to for me to take a little nap at an opportune moment so that I can ensure that you have the best of me.
